This uneven result means that hardware plays a crucial part in the reliability of call recording apps for Android. Some apps started to work when we turned on my smartphone’s speaker.

This can work very well if your smartphone comes with a noise-cancelling microphone -otherwise, the listener will get echoes back.

With that said, we urge you to try out all of the apps in this list and select the one that works for your particular device.

It truly believe in the importance of having these audio recorders because we can never really tell that you might receive a call that we need to grasp al the information that has been told and recording the conversation is the most convenient way to do it.           1. Hi Bill,
            Apologies for the late reply, but have you tried using a different player to play back the recorded call? You’ll need to go into system settings, application manager click on ACR and clear defaults. Then go back into the app and click on the file you want to play, choosing a different playback method. Hope this helps.=-)

      You want to make a fake call don’t you ! :). No there are no apps which allow you to pull this off. But you can manually record your voice and then a phone call with these apps. After that its just a matter of stitching the two files together.

  6. I have Call Recorder installed, but it gives too much static. If I want to check out the other four recommend recorder apps, do I have to first delete Call Recorder? I have several recordings from Call Recorder that I’d like to keep, but am afraid they would delete if I deleted the Call Recorder app (from which they were made) to try out the other four apps. Please advise. Thanks!

    1. Robyn, Hi you can locate where the files are by going into the call recorder settings and see where it is saving them. Then simple copy them to a safe location, preferably on your PC 🙂 I highly doubt that uninstalling the app will remove them but hey, it is better to be safe right.

        In certain states and countries, it is illegal to record a conversation without warning the other person. For legal reasons, sometimes we are forced to warn the other person, even if they have a tendency to lie. But, I completely understand what you are saying. Thanks for commenting. =-)

  10. Boldbeast Call Recorder is the best in my opinion. Why? because it records calls perfectly for many many phones without root, for example HTC M9, M8, Galaxy phones, Moto G/X/E etc. Other recorders ask you root your phone otherwise they can only record your voice (the caller’s voice is very weak).     I’ve downloaded the call recorder, Automatic Call Recorder but none of them can record the phone call in 2 ways. If I dont phone the phone conversation on the speaker, I can only record my voice.

    My phone is Samsung Galaxy S III, was wondering if there is a setting I need to change so I can record my phone call on the both sides.

  16. Been using Total Recall (paid version) on Galaxy S4 with no problem but now it only records part of the conversation maybe 1 minute of a 10 minute call. Not sure if there is limit to the storage capacity?

  21. I’ll pay anything for reliability. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy Edge. For most calls I use a Motorola Roadster 2 visor mounted (blue-tooth) speaker. I’ve tried several; the one that seemed the best was “Call Recorder” by Clever Mobile (Upgraded PRO version @$5.99). HOWEVER, it’s not reliable. Randomly, after reporting a call has been successfully saved, it turns out that from time to time the message “Sorry the player does not support this type of audio file” makes a review of the call impossible and what was needed as proof of what was said is lost. I need both sides of conversations recorded. I need a format that can be opened by any windows application; such as “.wav” Also, it would be ideal if a recording can be played during a phone with a 3rd party who has a “need to know”. What would be the best selection for me to use? Cost does not bother me if it’s 100% reliable and meets the above objectives.

    1. I think the Edge is basically the same as Galaxy S6. I’ve been using Total Recall on the Galaxy S4/5/6 for about four years. It works perfectly, records from LINE and have proven rock-solid reliable.

      Alert: It will not record during WiFi calling or BlueTooth use

  22. Hi, I recently took a part-time job a Mystery Shopper and because of that the interactions within the shop need to be recorded. Is there an app that works best to record external conversations; not necessarily one that is on a phone call itself. The recorded record of my visit would make it easier to do the review at the end of the shopping visit as the customer wants exact times and responses verbatim.

    In my case this would allow me to make my recordings legal in my state by setting it up to say “this call is being recorded.”
    I can do this myself every time i answer, but I’d really like it to automated.

  24. I have used Record My Call/RCM and when it works it is great. I had it installed on Samsung Galaxy II and currently on my HTC M8. the list at RMC does say it may not work on those phones but when they did, it was great because it is a very good app that records both sides of the calls. Tips/Tweaks are given. Unfortunately it has a lot of updates so it may work fine and then after an update not record at all or have to go to speakerphone, which defeats the reason of why i am using the app. I’m somewhat tech savvy but no nothing of rooting.
    I will definitely give a closer look at the other apps as back up if I continue to have problems with RMC. Thanks for the information!

    Can you please suggest a free app which helps me record phone calls of only a few selected contacts?

    The ones i found in the play store either let you record all calls or ignore all calls.

      You can try Automatic Call Recorder. As its name suggests, Automatic Call Recorder will automatically begin recording your phone calls based on the options that you set: Record All (records all phone calls except for contacts specifically ignored), Ignore All (records no calls except for specified contacts), and Ignore Contacts (records all phone calls from non-contacts as well as contacts specified to be recorded).   30. Why dont I get any of the conversation of the caller recorder on my Nexus 6+ running Android-M.

    On using other similar tools I get a error message the phone doesn’t support recording – this is latest of the google phones – whats wrong.

          I think that your carrier might not allow it if you get the error message. Depending on the country you are in, call recording is illegal and that could explain why even on a recent smartphone you can´t record a call. I recommend you call your carrier to ask them if they have that blocked. =-)

    I am searching for apps for both my Android phone and my friend’s Iphone as we are working on a project together. In my research for Iphone call recording apps I have come across many where the app is free but the recordings themselves are not. For example, you have to buy credits go get a certain number of calls recorded each month, or you get 20 free minutes per month but pay for any additional time, or the first 2 minutes of all calls record free but additional time is paid, etc. Do any of the Android options you list here include these fees? Or is this perhaps why you chose these as the best, because these don’t have all the fees?

  33. For all of you who want there to be an announcement that you are being recorded, Google Voice apparently does that. When you press “4” to initiate the recording it makes an announcement. The only problem with this app is that it only records INCOMING calls… boo.
    Also, RMC listed above only works on speakerphone! Maybe JOA folks could have listed that instead of “red color is pleasing”… maybe. 😉

After upgrading to Android 6.0 all recorders in the market don’t work well without root for popular phones like Galaxy S7, S6, S5, Note5, Note4, Moto G 3rd, Moto G Turbo Edition, Moto X Play, Sony Z5, Z4, Z3, HTC 10, LG-G5, G4, G3, Huawei Mate8, Mate S, P9, P8, P7, Honer7, Honer6, G8, G7 etc. However Boldbeast Call Recorder still works great for all these phones with Android 6.0, NO ROOT NEEDED, it records calls crystal clear in two directions. This is the only solution in the world that works really well without root.

    Boldbeast Call Recorder is the ONLY choice actually – All other recorders don’t work for Android 6.0!

      The ONLY app I have found that records BOTH sides of the conversation, without speakerphone or rooting is Boldbeast.

        As we talk about in the meat of the article (maybe you skimmed over it, that happens. I do it myself.) It’s mentioned that the hardware makes a difference in which apps work for who. I know I used to use the paid version of Sanity, but it no longer worked for me after I updated my old phone and didn’t work when I got a different phone with Marshmallow on it.

  35. Thanks for this article. I have tried a few of these apps and found them wanting in a several ways. Unfortunately, I didn’t keep good notes, but the problems were:
    – no apparent ability to record only certain calls
    – the automatic recording of calls requires CONSTANT maintenance of the data and all the ones I tried required to much work to delete unwanted recorded calls
    – a couple of the apps I tried had very intrusive notifications
    – one of the apps did not record both sides of the call.
    I realize the last problem may need that hardware incompatibility you wrote about, but, bottom line, I don’t want an app that will record all my calls which I will have to spend time deleting. I want to be able to turn on the refreshing process for individual calls only.

    1. I have a feeling it’s a difficult style app to develop. With all of the different handset makers, different versions of the Android OS and different laws in different countries, there is probably a lot to keep up on.

    When it comes to recording calls for professional purposes such as a research interview or a recruitment interview, a web-based service might score over an app. First, there are no compatibility issues, since there’s nothing to install. For that matter, the web-based services work with Android, iPhones and any other OS. Secondly, the method used for call recording by various apps varies and can cause a difference in the quality of call recordings. In a web-based service, the call is routed through an intermediate cloud-based service which means the recording quality will be as good as the call quality.

    http://www.recordator.com is such a web-based service for call recordings. They give 30 minutes of free call recording to try it out.

  37. This is a fabulous article. I became interested in this for my Nexus 5X with Nougat because I became convinced that a service provider was giving bad information or withholding information. I’m a newbie. Is this Android a rooted device or not? Based on that, since I need to record their side of the call and archive it (such as to Google Drive or to Gmail where I archive call logs) what would you recommend? Thanks.

  39. I tried the 2nd and 3rd apps in the list (Call Recorder and Automatic Call Recorder Pro) but neither of them would record from my Bluetooth earpiece.
    I then tried the 1st app – “Call Recorder – ACR” and it worked perfectly! I will probably buy the Paid version!
