If you are a person who has to make calls for a living, there is a good chance you might need a reliable call recorder.

For the latest tips, tricks and hacks, check out our dedicated section for Android Tricks.

A lot of smartphone manufacturers these days are building this almost mandatory feature into their phones, but a lot of them are still missing it.

Thankfully, we all use a platform that is pretty much open to any app, and we have the option to add features on.

There are many apps like these for Android available on the Google Play Store but, not many of them work well. We’ll be honest here; not every app will work on your smartphone or tablet.

Are you looking for the best Call Recording Apps for Android?

We learned this by testing around 15 apps on three different devices, and only four of them worked on all three smartphones.

This uneven result means that hardware plays a crucial part in the reliability of call recording apps for Android. Some apps started to work when we turned on my smartphone’s speaker.

This can work very well if your smartphone comes with a noise-cancelling microphone -otherwise, the listener will get echoes back.

With that said, we urge you to try out all of the apps in this list and select the one that works for your particular device.

Don’t take our word for it as is, because our experience is only limited to a few devices and these apps are very unpredictable.

With that said, check out our list of 5 Best Call Recording Apps for Android!

Never Forget a Convo!

1. Truecaller: Caller ID, Spam Blocking & Call Record

The Truecaller ID is more than a recording app, it is also a caller ID app and one that lets you blacklist or whitelist numbers.

If you are a Truecaller user, you can use the recording feature automatically during your call or before responding.

While the app itself is free, the call recorder feature can be accessed through buying a premium plan. However, if you have Android Pie running on your phone, this feature might not be available at all.

2. Call Recorder – ACR

This call recorder is perhaps the best one right now on the play store. The interface is very well designed and everything is extremely manageable.

The app automatically runs when you need it to run, and it records every call you make.

The calls are saved according to the number, and you can sift through the calls with various filters.

The app also allows you to group recordings by date, so you know when a call was made. The app will also be able to delete old recordings automatically.

If you don’t want a recording to be deleted; you can mark it as important. App also has options to display contact name and photo.

If you don’t want to record calls from a certain number you can exclude it from the recordings.

Google Play

3. Automatic Call Recorder

App Logo

The automatic call recorder was a marvelous app back when we tested it for the first time.

It is the very same app and provides the same features. However, many other apps have stepped up their game and taken its place on the list.

If you want a reliable call recording app on Android, this is one of those apps. The interface is very clear and provides all the functions right on the main screen.

4. Call Recorder

App Logo

This app may look really outdated by its interface but it does the job well. At the end of the day, we don’t need a call recorder to show us beautiful graphics, we need it to record the calls.

This is exactly what this call recorder app for Android does.

While the interface can certainly use an update, the major elements of the call recorder are easy to navigate through.

Every call you record will be shown right on the main screen and you will be also able to play them with ease.

There is a large button on the top of the screen which allows you to Swift through different filters making it easier to navigate.

While the calls are not recorded at full volume for some reason, they are recorded well.

5. Call Recorder S9 – Automatic Call Recorder Pro

App Logo

Automatic call recorder Pro has the best-looking interface in all of these apps.

We really love how well designed and beautiful this app looks.

However, the app may impress you with amazing looking interface but it’s the quality of voice recording which needs to be top-notch.

Thankfully, the app delivers on that front as well.

The app records the phone calls in the crystal-clear MP3 quality that allows you to relive conversations with utmost accuracy.

If you are a paying customer, you can also activate recordings by simply shaking the phone; saving you the trouble of pressing the virtual button.

The app also allows you to synchronize your recordings with a Dropbox account. This feature is essential if you record a lot of phone calls and need to free space on your smartphone.

Google Play

Are there apps that prevent call recording?

Yes, some apps could override the functions of other apps, especially call recording apps. Examples of these apps would be App Manager, Battery Optimizers, etc.

Can I use my Google App to record my calls?

Yes, you can use Google Voice to record your incoming calls. To do this, you can go to the incoming call options and press on enable call recording.

Why is my call recording app is only recording my phone?

This is because Android phones only allow one call recording application working. Remove the other call recording apps active.

Call Recording Apps – Never Forget a Conversation

These are some of the best call recording apps on Android and they work on most of the devices.

If one app doesn’t work on yours, we recommend that you try out another app without further investigation.

A lot of smartphones have incompatible hardware that hinders the apps from recording. We think this might be a root access issue, but I may be wrong, though.

Your feedback is essential in this article because it will help us refine which apps worked the best on the most number of hardware.

So, please feel free to leave a comment below if an app works and also tell us if it doesn’t. We will be waiting for your precious feedback regarding these apps.

It truly believe in the importance of having these audio recorders because we can never really tell that you might receive a call that we need to grasp al the information that has been told and recording the conversation is the most convenient way to do it. I will check individually on those applications and I will see which is best for me.

    1. Tried all the apps. None of them worked well. Could barely here other side of conversation wich is the most important to me. Salesmen who lie.

        1. I recently purchased Automatic Call recorder v4.28 and so far I have not been able to play back any calls, the slider bar just does not move. Any tips, I am using an Galaxy S4 – Android v4.4.2 What can I do to get this to work?

          1. Hi Bill,
Apologies for the late reply, but have you tried using a different player to play back the recorded call? You’ll need to go into system settings, application manager click on ACR and clear defaults. Then go back into the app and click on the file you want to play, choosing a different playback method. Hope this helps.=-)

        2. The best for Samsung devices is Total Recall. There is even a plug in specific to S-series & Note-series phones.

  2. Thanks for the article, however it would have been much more useful if you had specified the names of the app developers/distributors. The article cites 2 apps which are both named “Call Recorder”. Not easy to find the right one on the Play store without knowing the developer.

Pro tip: when writing future articles, do not wear your ass as a hat.

    1. Magilla Gorilla
We have given you the google play links in the article. Hope you can click it and download the one you want.

  3. Are there any apps that can voice record and then accept and record a phone call in the middle of the recording? Or do they all?

    1. Brad,
You want to make a fake call don’t you ! :). No there are no apps which allow you to pull this off. But you can manually record your voice and then a phone call with these apps. After that its just a matter of stitching the two files together.

  4. Are there any apps that will allow an outgoing voice message when the all is answered. I’d like to have the app say “this call may be recorded”, for each call. Possible?

  5. I have Call Recorder installed, but it gives too much static. If I want to check out the other four recommend recorder apps, do I have to first delete Call Recorder? I have several recordings from Call Recorder that I’d like to keep, but am afraid they would delete if I deleted the Call Recorder app (from which they were made) to try out the other four apps. Please advise. Thanks!

    1. Robyn, Hi you can locate where the files are by going into the call recorder settings and see where it is saving them. Then simple copy them to a safe location, preferably on your PC 🙂 I highly doubt that uninstalling the app will remove them but hey, it is better to be safe right.

  6. Did you find out if any of them say a message that this call will be recorded or any type of notification if the call is recorded.

    1. We shouldn’t have to worn anyone especially sales people who lie to get you to purchase from them. They either have integrity
or they don’t, and should be held responsible for anything they say.

      1. Hi David,
In certain states and countries, it is illegal to record a conversation without warning the other person. For legal reasons, sometimes we are forced to warn the other person, even if they have a tendency to lie. But, I completely understand what you are saying. Thanks for commenting. =-)

  7. Thanks for wonderful information !!

Recordings are very important as we are living now in Tech World 🙂

Total Recall Call Recorder – This app i have used but during call i have lost my battery power and recordings are saved as .pcm files so if anybody can tell me how to recover them so it would be very helpful for me.

    1. I am user for same app too and faced the same problem so on that time their team replied me this :

There is a way to convert these recordings. You can download “Audacity” – a free audio editor for Windows / Linux.

Copy the .pcm files to your computer. “Import” them as “Raw Audio” into Audacity program, set the Rate to 8000hz , 1 Channel, Signed PCM Audio, Little Endian

Then enjoy “record a phone call” with this application because it’s a very good application for Any android devices.
Also, You can install latest version as well.

Total Recall is super simple to use and has been engineered to provide the most Stable & Reliable call recording available. Most competing automatic call recorders only record calls from your device’s microphone – at very low volumes (if at all) – our app records from both sides of the line on more devices than ANY competing Call Recorder, and has since 2004!.

    1. I just tried Jit call recorder.
This is the best call recorder by far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
With clear precise voice recording. I almost can’t believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
      Thank you Taptigo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Boldbeast Call Recorder is the best in my opinion. Why? because it records calls perfectly for many many phones without root, for example HTC M9, M8, Galaxy phones, Moto G/X/E etc. Other recorders ask you root your phone otherwise they can only record your voice (the caller’s voice is very weak). Boldbeast recordings are loud and clear in two sides without root. Link:

  9. How do you get the app to record the whole conversation it’s shuts off after half of call. Thank you for any help on this.

    1. Hi Deb,

Which app are you talking about? Also would you tell me how long your call lasts? Maybe its a restriction from the developer’s end. Thanks

  10. Hello, i have installed this Total Recall app. Thanks for sharing this cool blog. Well written blog and very useful too.

  11. Hi,
I’ve downloaded the call recorder, Automatic Call Recorder but none of them can record the phone call in 2 ways. If I dont phone the phone conversation on the speaker, I can only record my voice.

My phone is Samsung Galaxy S III, was wondering if there is a setting I need to change so I can record my phone call on the both sides.

    Thanks for your help.

    1. Annie,

They are supposed to record both of the participants. I’ll check the apps again and get back to you.

  12. I have tried most of the apps in the given list. But all record only my voice. I need app that will record both way conversation.

  13. Been using Total Recall (paid version) on Galaxy S4 with no problem but now it only records part of the conversation maybe 1 minute of a 10 minute call. Not sure if there is limit to the storage capacity?

    1. Hi Manpreet Singh Rehsi,
I am happy to hear that that Jit Call Recorder worked for you. What is it about the app that you like?

  14. Is there a way to present a message telling the caller that they are being recorded before the call ever goes through to me?

    1. Hi Richard,
Just to make sure I understood your question correctly, you want to let the other person know that they are being recorded or you want to be able to know if the other person is recording you?

  15. I’ll pay anything for reliability. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy Edge. For most calls I use a Motorola Roadster 2 visor mounted (blue-tooth) speaker. I’ve tried several; the one that seemed the best was “Call Recorder” by Clever Mobile (Upgraded PRO version @$5.99). HOWEVER, it’s not reliable. Randomly, after reporting a call has been successfully saved, it turns out that from time to time the message “Sorry the player does not support this type of audio file” makes a review of the call impossible and what was needed as proof of what was said is lost. I need both sides of conversations recorded. I need a format that can be opened by any windows application; such as “.wav” Also, it would be ideal if a recording can be played during a phone with a 3rd party who has a “need to know”. What would be the best selection for me to use? Cost does not bother me if it’s 100% reliable and meets the above objectives.

    1. I think the Edge is basically the same as Galaxy S6. I’ve been using Total Recall on the Galaxy S4/5/6 for about four years. It works perfectly, records from LINE and have proven rock-solid reliable.

Alert: It will not record during WiFi calling or BlueTooth use

  16. Hi, I recently took a part-time job a Mystery Shopper and because of that the interactions within the shop need to be recorded. Is there an app that works best to record external conversations; not necessarily one that is on a phone call itself. The recorded record of my visit would make it easier to do the review at the end of the shopping visit as the customer wants exact times and responses verbatim.

  17. I was looking for a call recorder that included a very simple feature: an automatic message upon call answer.
In my case this would allow me to make my recordings legal in my state by setting it up to say “this call is being recorded.”
I can do this myself every time i answer, but I’d really like it to automated.

  18. I have used Record My Call/RCM and when it works it is great. I had it installed on Samsung Galaxy II and currently on my HTC M8. the list at RMC does say it may not work on those phones but when they did, it was great because it is a very good app that records both sides of the calls. Tips/Tweaks are given. Unfortunately it has a lot of updates so it may work fine and then after an update not record at all or have to go to speakerphone, which defeats the reason of why i am using the app. I’m somewhat tech savvy but no nothing of rooting.
I will definitely give a closer look at the other apps as back up if I continue to have problems with RMC. Thanks for the information!

    1. Hi Anya,
Updates can always affect if an app will continue to work or not. Let me know about your experience with the other apps and you are most welcome for the info. =-)

  19. Hello. I downloaded Automatic Call Recoder and I use it on my Samsung Galaxy S5 and it works well, but it seems to randomly not record some of my phone calls and I cannot tell why this is. Can you help?

    1. Hi Cathal,
Have you checked the settings of the app. Maybe the way its set up may be causing it to only record certain calls. =-)

  20. Hi,

Can you please suggest a free app which helps me record phone calls of only a few selected contacts?

The ones i found in the play store either let you record all calls or ignore all calls.
I would like to record calls from 2-3 contacts only. Which app helps you do that?

    1. Hi Rohit,
You can try Automatic Call Recorder. As its name suggests, Automatic Call Recorder will automatically begin recording your phone calls based on the options that you set: Record All (records all phone calls except for contacts specifically ignored), Ignore All (records no calls except for specified contacts), and Ignore Contacts (records all phone calls from non-contacts as well as contacts specified to be recorded). Hope this helps. =-)

      1. Hello Judy,

thanks for the quick response. I tried the app earlier, but an issue i observed was that i was not able to play any of the recordings.

May i know how i can resolve that ?

        1. Hi Rohit,
You´re welcome. I would check to see if the app saved the recorded call in your audio folder. Every app works differently and maybe this one did that. =-) I hope it’s there.

    1. Hi Natalie,
App #5, allows you to move recordings to the memory card right from the app. Combine this feature with OTG (On the Go) cable and a USB and you will backup stuff in no time at all. Hope this helps. Thanks for commenting. =-)

    1. Hi Sarah,
You could try app number 5 since it allows you to move recordings to the memory card right from the app. Let me know how it works out for you. Thanks for commenting. =-)

  21. Why dont I get any of the conversation of the caller recorder on my Nexus 6+ running Android-M.

On using other similar tools I get a error message the phone doesn’t support recording – this is latest of the google phones – whats wrong.

    1. Hi Sam,
Have you tried the tools you have tried on a phone on Lollipop or even KitKat? Just to see that it has nothing to do with the many bugs Marshmallow still has. =-)

        1. Hi Sam,
I think that your carrier might not allow it if you get the error message. Depending on the country you are in, call recording is illegal and that could explain why even on a recent smartphone you can´t record a call. I recommend you call your carrier to ask them if they have that blocked. =-)

  22. Unfortunately neither worked on my S7 Edge. I am looking for recorder that can record all voice while i am using BT. Unfortunately, i cannot find the right one. Pity, there is built-in app on my Windows10 Phone….it works as charm……..sad, android does not have one.

  23. Hi JOA Team,
Thanks for all the great info, this article was much more informative than many others I have read today.
I am searching for apps for both my Android phone and my friend’s Iphone as we are working on a project together. In my research for Iphone call recording apps I have come across many where the app is free but the recordings themselves are not. For example, you have to buy credits go get a certain number of calls recorded each month, or you get 20 free minutes per month but pay for any additional time, or the first 2 minutes of all calls record free but additional time is paid, etc. Do any of the Android options you list here include these fees? Or is this perhaps why you chose these as the best, because these don’t have all the fees?
Thanks for your time and help!!

    1. Hi There,
The apps mentioned here don´t have those fees. Are you looking for one with certain features? =-)

  24. For all of you who want there to be an announcement that you are being recorded, Google Voice apparently does that. When you press “4” to initiate the recording it makes an announcement. The only problem with this app is that it only records INCOMING calls… boo.
Also, RMC listed above only works on speakerphone! Maybe JOA folks could have listed that instead of “red color is pleasing”… maybe. 😉

  25. After upgrading to Android 6.0 all recorders in the market don’t work well without root for popular phones like Galaxy S7, S6, S5, Note5, Note4, Moto G 3rd, Moto G Turbo Edition, Moto X Play, Sony Z5, Z4, Z3, HTC 10, LG-G5, G4, G3, Huawei Mate8, Mate S, P9, P8, P7, Honer7, Honer6, G8, G7 etc. However Boldbeast Call Recorder still works great for all these phones with Android 6.0, NO ROOT NEEDED, it records calls crystal clear in two directions. This is the only solution in the world that works really well without root.

Boldbeast Call Recorder is the ONLY choice actually – All other recorders don’t work for Android 6.0!

    1. I sometimes wonder if the people who publish these ‘best’ lists bother to test the apps. I suspect they just cash the check they got for a favorable review.

The ONLY app I have found that records BOTH sides of the conversation, without speakerphone or rooting is Boldbeast.

      1. There are checks?

As we talk about in the meat of the article (maybe you skimmed over it, that happens. I do it myself.) It’s mentioned that the hardware makes a difference in which apps work for who. I know I used to use the paid version of Sanity, but it no longer worked for me after I updated my old phone and didn’t work when I got a different phone with Marshmallow on it.

      1. There are some apps that do require root, but there are plenty of others that don’t if you don’t want to root your device.

  26. Thanks for this article. I have tried a few of these apps and found them wanting in a several ways. Unfortunately, I didn’t keep good notes, but the problems were:
    – no apparent ability to record only certain calls
    – the automatic recording of calls requires CONSTANT maintenance of the data and all the ones I tried required to much work to delete unwanted recorded calls
    – a couple of the apps I tried had very intrusive notifications
    – one of the apps did not record both sides of the call.
I realize the last problem may need that hardware incompatibility you wrote about, but, bottom line, I don’t want an app that will record all my calls which I will have to spend time deleting. I want to be able to turn on the refreshing process for individual calls only.

    1. I have a feeling it’s a difficult style app to develop. With all of the different handset makers, different versions of the Android OS and different laws in different countries, there is probably a lot to keep up on.

  27. That’s a great article Billa. I appreciate it that you took the pains of testing the apps yourself and have been frank about the compatibility issues of the apps with just 3 handsets.

When it comes to recording calls for professional purposes such as a research interview or a recruitment interview, a web-based service might score over an app. First, there are no compatibility issues, since there’s nothing to install. For that matter, the web-based services work with Android, iPhones and any other OS. Secondly, the method used for call recording by various apps varies and can cause a difference in the quality of call recordings. In a web-based service, the call is routed through an intermediate cloud-based service which means the recording quality will be as good as the call quality. is such a web-based service for call recordings. They give 30 minutes of free call recording to try it out.

  28. This is a fabulous article. I became interested in this for my Nexus 5X with Nougat because I became convinced that a service provider was giving bad information or withholding information. I’m a newbie. Is this Android a rooted device or not? Based on that, since I need to record their side of the call and archive it (such as to Google Drive or to Gmail where I archive call logs) what would you recommend? Thanks.

  29. Great article, I have the automatic call recorder app on a Samsung S5 mobile. Works great except for recording calls using bluetooth. There is an option to enable bluetooth, it just doesnt work. Anyone recommend a call recorder that can record calls via bluetooth?

  30. I tried the 2nd and 3rd apps in the list (Call Recorder and Automatic Call Recorder Pro) but neither of them would record from my Bluetooth earpiece.
I then tried the 1st app – “Call Recorder – ACR” and it worked perfectly! I will probably buy the Paid version!

    Thanks for the round-up!

LG V10, about 7 months old

  31. I have tried so many apps but I have found one common issue that is time limit of recording. I cannot record call more than 2 to 3 minutes.
    Plz help me…..

    1. Have you tried the first app listed in the article? This is the one I use personally, and I’ve never had a problem recording long calls. You can snag it from the Play Store here. Please let us know if this works for you.

  32. I just downloaded the ACR app but I do not wish to record every call…..only few selected ones……is there a way to manually do this????
I cannot seem to find this…….not what I wanted.
