The latest Android smartphones and tablets are mini computers and they can be used as alternatives to PCs. You can easily store your HD videos, images and documents on your Android device. While Android devices do give you an excellent storage facility for all your important files, this might come at a cost if you have confidential or personal files on your phone. Even if your phone doesn’t get in the wrong hands, your friends might easily come across your personal documents, videos and pictures. That being said, like other problems on Android, there are solutions to this problem as well.
If you have some important files and folders on your phone that you don’t want others to see, then continue reading to find out how you can hide files and folders on your Android device. I’ll show you three different methods on how to hide files on Android, you don’t even have to install any third party apps from the Google Play Store. If you want to hide the files from your kids, then you might also be interested in reading about the 10 best parental control apps.
Method 1: File Hide Expert
This first method focuses on using a third party app from the Google Play Store in order to hide your files. While you can also follow the other two methods mentioned below, using this app is extremely easy and you’ll be able to hide your files and folders in just seconds. File Hide Expert is one of the most popular file hiding apps available on the Google Play Store.
Downloaded by millions of Android users, it features a smooth interface and you can easily view unhidden and hidden files. Even if you uninstall the app, the files remain hidden on your phone and you can reinstall the app in order to view them or unhide them.
Download and install the File Hide Expert app on your Android device. You can download it through the Google Play button below.
Open the app and tap on the Folder icon in the top right corner. You’ll now be taken to the file manager screen.
Browse through the file manager and look for the files or folders that you want to hide. In order to select the files or folders that you want to hide, tap on the Plus icon next to each folder and file name.
Once you are done selecting the files and folders, they’ll appear in the main screen of the app. Tap on the Hide All button to hide all the selected files and folders. That’s it! Your selected files and folders are now hidden and others won’t be able to see them.
In order to unhide the files and folders, tap on the Unhide All button.
Method 2: Manual A
This first manual method focuses on hiding an entire folder from your phone. This is quite similar to PCs and folders on PCs are hidden in the same manner. Even though this is a manual method, it is extremely easy and you’ll be able to hide your folders in just several seconds.
While this method doesn’t use a file hiding third party app, you’ll still need to install a file manager if you don’t have one pre-installed on your Android device.
Download and install a file manager on your phone if you don’t already have one installed. One of the best file managers is ES File Explorer and you can download it through the Google Play button below.
Create a new folder and place all the files that you want to hide in the new folder. Rename the folder to whatever you want, but make sure that you put a dot in the beginning. For example, if you want to rename the folder to “hidingplace”, it should be “.hidingplace”. You don’t need to create a new folder if you want to hide an entire folder. Simply add the dot sign in the beginning of the folder name. That’s it! The folder is now hidden.
Method 3: Manual B
This method lets you hide the files inside a specific folder and once hidden, no apps will display the hidden files, such as the Gallery or Videos app. This method is also quite easy and it will take only a couple of minutes to hide the files.
We’ll create a special file with no extension and you’ll need to use a PC in order to create this file and transfer it on your phone. You might also be able to create it directly on your phone, but using a PC would be better.
Open the NotePad or WordPad app on your PC and create a blank file. You don’t need to write inside the document and it should just be a blank file.
Once you save the file, it will have a .txt extension. Rename this file and change the name to “.nomedia”. You just need to add a dot sign in the beginning, change the name to nomedia and remove the .txt extension in the end.
Connect your phone to your PC using a micro USB cable and click on Open folder to view files in the AutoPlay popup.
Transfer the “.nomedia” file to the folder that you want to hide. For example, if you want to hide the Pictures folder, transfer the file in the Pictures folder. You can also create a new folder for hiding specific files and transfer the “.nomedia” file to that folder. That’s it! You can now disconnect your phone from your PC and your files will be hidden.
One of my favorite things about the Android Operating System is that for almost every problem, there is a simple solution and even if the solution isn’t available directly, third party apps from the Google Play store can solve the issue. Safety is probably one of the most important needs of Android users and while pattern and password locks can protect the phone generally, you also need to consider the safety of your files and folders, in case your phone gets into the wrong hands. Even if you don’t have confidential documents on your phone, you should consider hiding your personal files from the people who aren’t that close to you.
A lot of users don’t really know how to hide files and folders on their Android devices and they end up using a pattern or password lock instead. If you don’t want to enable a password lock on your phone so that others can use it, but you don’t want them to see certain files and folders, then you can easily hide your files and folders using the methods mentioned above. While Method 1 is quite simple and easy to use, you can take matters into your own hands by manually hiding the files using either Method 2 or Method 3. Whichever method you choose, make sure that you follow all the instructions on how to hide files on Android and feel free to shoot any questions below.
