12 Tips, Tricks and Hacks for the Xiaomi Mi 4


The Xiaomi Mi 4 is a high-end device with a lot to offer, and there are some tips you can use to get even more from your handset. It’s a top device that has helped the company to dominate the Chinese phone market, and it’s starting to be recognised more widely by an international audience.

Are you one of the new owners? You’re unlikely to be disappointed if you decided to go for a new brand. If you’re interested in getting the most from your device, here’s a list of 12 tips, tricks, and hacks.

Let’s get started with one of the handiest tips on the list;

1. Turning on the Torch


Okay, so a torch might not be the most exciting trick, but you can quickly launch the torch on the Xiaomi Mi 4 to make sure that you can always see what’s going on around you.

To quickly launch the torch:

  1. Hold down the Home Button when your phone is locked.
  2. The torch screen will come on automatically.
  3. Press the Power button on the right side of your phone to keep the torch on for as long as you need.

2. Optimize Audio Quality While Recording


One of the most important aspects of a device is audio quality. If you can’t be heard properly, what’s the point in recording audio? If you want to make sure that the sound quality is crystal clear;

  1. Go to your Settings, and tap Recorder.
  2. Tap Recording Type.

It’s really annoying if you phone somebody by mistake while your device is in your pocket. It’s happened to all of us, but you can stop it from ever happening again thanks to a decent feature found on the Xiaomi Mi 4.

  1. Go to your main Settings menu.
  2. Tap Lock Screen.
  3. Flick the toggle to Prevent Pocket Dials.

This is a great feature, and it could have saved me a lot of embarrassment in the past. (Nevermind the time I’ve spent listening to people walking.)

5. Arranging Icons


It’s easy enough to arrange icons to fit folders and pages on your screen, but there’s a trick you can use to get them to line up neatly if there’s any space.

Pinching the Home Screen with three fingers will quickly open a new menu that will allow you to arrange your icons. It’s another quick tip, and it’s handy if you’re always swapping and deleting folders and apps.

6. Quick Screenshots

Taking a screenshot on the Xiaomi Mi 4 is easy enough, and the process is similar if you’ve owned an Android device in the past. Press and hold the Menu and Volume Down keys to capture the image, and you can view it from the Notification Panel.

It’s might take a bit of getting used to, but it’ll become second nature soon enough.

7. Battery Options to Save Power


Everybody wants more from their device, and battery life is one of the most common issues that users have problems with. You can check the battery saving options found in the Power Saving Menu to toggle your settings. Tap Battery in the Settings menu to find these options.

The music player can be easily accessed with another quick shortcut, and it only takes a few quick taps.

Just double tap the centre of the circle of your locked screen to switch open controls for your music. It’s a lot faster than unlocking your device each time you want to change the song.

9. Check Network Speeds


This is a great way to add your network speed to to the status bar on your device, so you’ll always have a good idea of how your device is doing. (It’s a lot easier than navigating through the menus to find the same information.)

  1. Open your Settings.
  2. Tap Notifications to open a new menu.
  3. Tap Show Connection Speed to keep up to date with your speed.

10. Private Messages

As anybody with siblings or nosy friends knows, it can be hard to keep your phone private. It’s one of the many reasons why The Xiaomi Mi private messaging feature is so useful. Here’s how to get it working;

  1. Open the message you would like to keep private.
  2. Pull the screen down until the device opens the Private Messaging Window.
  3. You should now be free to send messages that won’t show up later on your device.

11. Noise Suppression


The device gives you the option to suppress the mics, which should make it easier for you to be heard on the handset.

  1. Go to the Settings menu and tap Sound.
  2. Near the bottom of the screen, find the option called Suppress Noise During Calls.
  3. You should be able to choose which of the mics you want to suppress during calls from here.

You can also choose to suppress both, but this can sometimes lead to issues with the other person on the line unable to hear you. Test all of the settings to see which is right for you.

12. Shake to Arrange Icons


This is a weird one, but it’s fun if you don’t like seeing empty spaces on your home screen. You need to hold down the Menu button and shake the phone gently for the icons to rearrange themselves.

(Of course, it’s inadvisable to go overboard when shaking your device, so be careful.)
